Australia's Commonwealth Walkway launched on the Gold Coast

September 28, 2017

Mayor Tom Tate participated in the walkway today, along with Deputy Mayor Donna Gates, Junior Council members, Destination Gold Coast staff, Bleach* Festival Director Louise Bezzina and other community members.

Mayor Tate said: “You’re invited on a walking trail that tells some fascinating tales of our city.  The walkway is really a historic and scenic discovery trail, with walkers encouraged to complete a passport along the way, based on 37 bronze markers posted along sections of the walk.  Each marker includes a piece of history on the city and inside the passport is a question about each location.  Once you’ve answered all the questions, you present your completed passport at our Customer Service Centre and you’ll receive a Commonwealth Walkway Certificate of Achievement.  Step by step, discover our city: the Commonwealth Walkway challenge."

The 10 kilometre Commonwealth Walkway offers an insight into the heritage of the Gold Coast, starting at Southport Chambers, Nerang St and finishing at Evandale Council Chambers.  Highlights of the walkway include the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, the Stafford bikini sign, the Les Rogers Memorial Sanctuary, Chevron Island Bridge and St Margaret’s Chapel.

The Commonwealth Walkway is a lasting legacy of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and one of 100 walkways across the Commonwealth.

“This walkway promotes pride in the city as well as offering a challenging way to learn about the history of the Gold Coast.  For many years to come, people of all ages will enjoy the Commonwealth Walkway at their own pace and experience some of the iconic locations in our city.” said Mayor Tate.
