Thanks to Felix Wilson, the President of the Commonwealth Games Association in Dominica, the Trust was delighted to meet the Minister for Youth, Sport and Culture in the Commonwealth of Dominica this week to get their support for a Commonwealth Walkway in Roseau.
On the first day of our visit a cruise ship soon filled the horizon of the Garraway Hotel on the sea front in the Capital but the road quickly closed and literally thousands spread into the town to discover of the island. Too many seemed happy to jump into the buses, miss the town, and head straight to the mountains, waterfalls and hot springs. It is understandable, the nature of this island is stunning and the fact they have managed to hold on to 85% of their virgin forest is quite remarkable!...But the town itself has its own story, well worth exploring, and gives immediate access to much of the Island story without a bus!....
So the Trust has, for the last few days, worked alongside the Mayor and relevant Ministers to get to grips with the Dominica story. Following the harbour front a 5km route has been developed linking the markets, unique rivers and botanical gardens. At least 15 points of significance have been identified and though the walk should take about 2 hours there are so many friendly additions it could well take longer!....Several times we have been 'peeped' by locals concerned we might miss the ferry, but we are quick to explain we are in fact working!.. it would be easy to fill a day.
Freshwater lakes, volcanoes, rain forest, sulphur springs and the most centurions per capita of any where in the world prove Dominica is special. Hopefully, with the support of The President and Prime Minister, we can share its uniqueness globally as a particularly bright jewel in theCaribbean.
