The Governor General of Australia, Sir Peter Cosgrove, kindly unveiled the foundation marker of the first Commonwealth Walkway in Australia today with Mayor Tom Tate, host City of the next Commonwealth Games in 2018.
His Excellency, Sir Peter, said "The Gold Coast Commonwealth Walkway will ensure a lasting legacy for the Games, athletes and the Commonwealth of nations."
Mayor Tate added "The Gold Coast is going on the world stage and it starts today. This Commonwealth Walkway is the first one off the rank - that's how we like to do it on the Gold Coast".
Nigel Chamier, Chairman of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, was also in attendance and spoke to Outdoor Trust Trustee Kathleen Quigley at the launch. He added that he was ' Very excited about the marker and Walkway' and he kindly offered help to ensure more of the nations followed the Gold Coast lead.
The Trust is looking forward to supporting other towns and cities in Australia interested in completing additional Commonwealth Walkways and is meanwhile extremely grateful to The Mayor, for once again leading by example in the Gold Coast; The Governor General, for making the special trip for the launch and demonstrating the significance of the Commonwealth Walkway initiative to Australia; and, importantly the local people in the Gold Coast who have already been so supportive of the project especially Alton Twine and Tracy Clark.
